Corrections

Corrections log.

Every correction to a published TrueCOLA figure, on the permanent public record.

Every correction to a published TrueCOLA figure is recorded here with the original statement, the corrected statement, the reason, and any prior calculations affected. The log is deposited to the Internet Archive at every modification.

  • 2026-09-10

Original: "It is not the CPI percent converted, restated, or translated into dollars," on the homepage (two places), the press page, the About page, and the AI Companion preamble, in related wording.

Corrected: The Margin Report is the Consumer Price Index basket, priced in dollars from government figures and one labeled Zillow rent line, subtracted from take-home pay.

Reason: The original sentence misdescribed the relationship between the Margin Report and the CPI basket.

Prior calculations affected: None. No published figure changed.

  • 2026-09-09

Original: the 2026-08-21 notice that cited -$1,949 as the then-current data/report-data.json two-adult national renter margin

Corrected: the frozen July 2026 edition now on the site publishes -$1,950 at national.adult2.m[0] (sha256 prefix 486f4bd6e5fd). June 2026 remains -$1,949. The August 21 notice stays on this log as the public record of that earlier build mismatch.

Reason: Version-context check. Home, live JSON, the July archive JSON, and the pinned July hash all show -$1,950 for the two-adult national renter margin. The August 21 card described a then-current file value; it does not replace the frozen July bytes. No workbook cell was recomputed.

Prior calculations affected: None. Published July JSON and workbook values were not restamped. Display still reads m[0] and does not sum rounded component lines.

  • 2026-08-23

Original: The rent-share multiples across the seven groups range from 2.0x (senior couple) to 8.7x (one Social Security benefit).

Corrected: The rent-share multiples across the seven groups range from 2.0x (senior couple) to 8.7x (one Social Security benefit). Nothing published changes with this notice.

Reason: The 2.0x floor comes from the senior-couple row. That construction is under revision. The floor will move when corrected figures publish. The 8.7x ceiling isn't part of the revision. The 2026-08-21 entry's verification was internally accurate against figures that are themselves being revised.

Prior calculations affected: Nothing published changes with this notice. June and July stay frozen. A successor entry restates the range when the corrected cycle ships.

  • 2026-08-21

Original: the published July 2026 margin, -$1,950

Corrected: the published July 2026 margin, -$1,949

Reason: A stale copy of report-data.json was baked into a site build. The then-current two-adult national renter margin cited for data/report-data.json was -$1,949 (m[0]). No underlying data value changed. A build-time hash check now fails if the public copy drifts from the canonical file. See the 2026-09-09 entry for the frozen July 2026 edition now on the site.

Prior calculations affected: Homepage hero, dial copy, and /cpi/ presentation only. Component lines were already rounded on their own. Published workbook values were not changed.

  • 2026-08-21

Original: three to nearly nine times above it

Corrected: about two to nearly nine times above it

Reason: Verified against the report's own published figures. The rent-share multiples across the seven groups range from 2.0x (senior couple) to 8.7x (one Social Security benefit). The prior floor of three overstated the range.

Prior calculations affected: Narrative claim only. No published data value changed. The current report and generator template were corrected. The June 2026 archive was left frozen per policy and is covered by this entry.
